Tory takes us through the season’s major trends, from jockey-silk patterns and equestrian-chic to midi hemlines and wide-leg pants.

Horse Play
“Growing up, I used to ride horses every summer and always loved the details you see in horse racing, dressage and hunter-jumper. It felt right to incorporate some of those details into the collection. The bold colors on our classic peacoats and button-downs, for instance, come from jockey-silk patterns. And we blew up an equestrian print on sweaters and dresses so it’s almost abstract.”

La Vie Sportif
“I’ve been working on Tory Sport for a while, but this was the first time we included it on the runway. I’m really excited about it. We mixed in tennis jackets, tracksuits and some polo shirts, and they worked seamlessly with our Fall collection. All the Tory Sport looks are available now at our pop-up shop in New York City and at torysport.com.”

The Bottom Line
“There’s a great a long wide-leg pant this season – it elongates the leg and is such an easy and classic look. If you’re into skinny pants, we did a take on a jodhpur I wore growing up. It’s slim and cropped. We paired it back to a bomber and a riding shirt, but there are so many ways to wear it as well.”

Only Hue
“We wanted to do classic color combinations and really thought about what works beautifully together. It was fun playing with that, but the palette was also very focused. We picked the best green, the best blue, the best red, the best orange…”

Middle Ground
“We put the focus on the midi hemline this season. It’s a flattering, modern length that shows off a great pair of knee-high boots, ankle boots or mules. It’s really versatile, too, and can be worn in different ways, can look grown-up or quite young. It’s great for day — paired with a fisherman’s sweater or a bow blouse — but you can also wear a midi dress or skirt into the evening. Put on a great heel and you’re done.”

Bombers Away
“While working on Sport, I have become really interested in bombers, and did a few versions this season. I love how you can do so much with this particular shape. We did short bombers in quilted suede — it’s a really beautiful take on street style — and a long, down-to-the-ground style in a lovely blue and a very lightweight down.”

American Idle
“Tunics have always been an important part of our collection, since our first season. Every year, we update the look. For Fall, we talked about pajama dressing and reinterpreted the tunic in pajama-like looks, done in lamé and beautiful graphic prints. They’re very flattering and can go from day to evening.” — Tory
