Paris’ Le Mathis Bar is back. Located at Hotel Mathis on 3 Rue de Ponthieu, Le Mathis has a history as one of those in-the-know, underground boîtes. Even its entrance is hidden, tucked behind an unassuming door. And what a guest list. Françoise Sagan, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino Garavani, Kate Moss, Charlotte Gainsbourg — they were all regulars at this hot spot founded by Gérald Nanty, a legendary fixture in Parisian nightlife.
Today, the trio behind Experimental Cocktail Club have taken over the helm, but left pretty much everything intact, from its plush boudoir-style vibe to its Art Nouveau chandelier, Bernard Buffet paintings and signature fern-patterned carpeting. There’s a nod to its origin on the cocktail menu, too. The Bel de Nuit, made with cachaça, vermouth and lemon juice, is named after a 2007 biography on Nanty himself.
