If you’re looking for a hit of the tropics in New York, head to Broken Shaker, the rooftop bar at Flatiron’s Freehand hotel. Once you get past the lines, you’ll feel worlds away from Manhattan’s gritty concrete jungle and transported to, well, a beautifully lush island jungle. With interiors by Roman and Williams, whose client roster includes Le Coucou and the Boom Boom Room at the Standard, the four-room space is filled with quirky bohemian touches, from wicker lighting and a hand-painted bull mask to cool artwork by students from Bard College. And while this Broken Shaker edition is fairly new, having opened just this summer, the company’s already nabbed a number of serious accolades — the hot spot, which originated in Miami and also has outposts in Chicago and Los Angeles, has two James Beard Award nominations and a perch on the list of The World’s 50 Best Bars. Cocktails include twists on classics — Cocoa Puff Old Fashioned; Preserved Lime Caipirinha — as well as only-in-New-York libations, like Curry in a Hurry, which features vodka, gin, red curried honey, fresh citrus and pineapple and nods to the “Curry Hill” neighborhood a few blocks away.
