Art is a constant inspirational refrain for fashion designers — including Tory, of course, who studied art history in college. This week, she’s taking part in the Art x Fashion auction, open till Nov. 19th, which celebrates those cozy creative bedfellows. Hosted by auction house Paddle8, in partnership with the CFDA, she’s one of 20 designers who have handpicked works that personally resonated for them. For Tory, it was Insomnia by Louise Bourgeois. “I love her bold use of color,” she says, “and the way the soft, painterly lines play off of the geometric pattern.” Other designers include Francisco Costa, who chose a work by an artist raised in his native Brazil, Janaina Tschape; Donna Karan, who selected a watercolor by her husband, Stephan Weiss; Prabal Gurung, who opted for a painting by his friend Hanuk Hanuk, and Carolina Herrera, who singled out a Bill Cunningham photograph of her very chic self at a ball in 1979. See the slideshow above for more pairings and head over to Paddle8 here for the full auction, the proceeds of which go to benefit the CFDA and its programs.
