Photographer Stephan Dessaint wasn’t always on the photo track. He started his career on the retail side, working for French label Kookai, before pursuing a more creative path as an art director. Now, he’s turned the page on a new chapter: lensman whose beach shots have been featured in galleries from New York to St. Barts. We chat with the man here.
My style…
I used to be a fashion photographer, but, little by little, I felt frustrated by having too many directives — models, clothes, locations, stylists…
My influences…
I really love every kind of photography, from landscape to fashion.
The subjects I’m most drawn to…
The beach is my best inspiration. I love to see the people on it and catch a moment of life.
Favorite beach in the world…
Formentera — it’s so incredible.
The key to a good photo…
Take the time, be at the right place and be ready for it. And, suddenly, you can catch the magic moment.
I have a few — a Canon Mark 2 5D, with a few lenses, and when I travel light, a Sony Nex 7.
Advice for would-be photographers…
Don’t listen to anybody. Just take pictures with inspiration and believe.
Favorite photography book…
Helmut Newton’s Sumo book.
