2019 NYC Health Guide
2019 NYC Health Guide
Whether your New Year’s resolution involves meditation, green juice, trying out boxing — our campaign star Maia Cotton recommends Gotham Gym, natch — or getting in a little more “me time,” we have ideas for you. There are the heavenly massages at The Greenwich Hotel’s Shibui Spa, or… we chatted with lifelong New Yorker and chef Romilly Newman about NYC healthy eats and her tips for post-holiday refreshment in 2019.
Where you go to course-correct after the holidays….
I love HigherDOSE at 11 Howard. It’s an infrared sauna room you rent out for 30 or 60 minutes to sweat out all the toxins. For me, it acts as a great time to reflect, unwind and recharge.
When I need to feel rejuvenated, I go to…
CAP beauty, a food and natural-beauty wonderland. I stock up on Goop skincare, Moon Juice powders, Sun Potion adaptogens, Tata Harper creams…
One health or wellness spot not to miss…
MNDFL meditation studio — their 30-minute meditation classes are a great way to start your day feeling energized and clearheaded.
Your New Year’s resolution…
To set goals and actually follow through with them!
Top three healthy NYC restaurants…
1. abcV makes consistently flavorful and delicate food in a beautifully-designed space.

2. west~bourne is an all-day cafe that serves thoughtful, healthy fare with a Californian influence. Their bright napa cabbage chopped salad offset by smoky charred scallions is an ideal midday meal.

3. And lastly, the rotisserie chicken at Uncle Boons is a favorite of mine. It’s unbelievably juicy meat served with mango salad and a gingery dipping sauce.
Your go-to healthy delivery…
Lighthouse Outpost! They make a perfect chicken bowl with coconut rice, cucumber, herbs and salsa verde. It’s fresh and has tremendous depth of flavor.
Your go-to healthy takeout…
I’ve been going to City Bakery since I was a kid, and it has always been consistently great. They have delicious fresh market vegetables, salads and proteins. It’s the perfect spot for healthy fare on the go.
Favorite salad in the city…
The vegan Caesar salad from Lalito is incredible. It’s crunchy, it’s creamy and it just really does the trick.

Favorite soup in the city…
Mimi Cheng’s 12-hour chicken broth is a thing of wonder. It’s a rich, savory chicken soup with scallions and organic chicken meatballs.
Favorite juice in the city…
I’m a huge Pressed Juicery fan. I love everything they make, especially the seasonal flavors.
Favorite place for a healthy snack…
Clover Grocery has the best selection of healthy offerings, and it’s impossible to leave without wanting to buy half the store. I love the flaxseed crackers they make, they’re a perfect pair to any great dip.
Favorite healthy bodega…
The newly-opened Bonberi Bodega is a dreamy place to satisfy every healthy craving. The store is bright and beautifully-designed, and they sell everything from coconut sea salt & vinegar chips to flower bouquets.
What you always have in your fridge or pantry…
Maldon salt, good olive oil, lemon and fresh herbs
Your go-to grocery store or farmers market…
Shopping at the Union Square farmers market is one of my favorite parts of living in New York City. Whenever I need inspiration, I’ll go there and compose a dish based on whatever fresh produce strikes my interest.
Your favorite healthy secret weapon or ingredient…
It’s not a secret, but I think spices and herbs are such an important part of cooking. Not only do they add great flavor, but so many have tremendous nutritional value. No matter how healthy, food should always be vibrant and flavorful.
Your source for spices…
SOS Chefs, in my opinion, is one of the best food stores in existence. They sell spices, salts, vinegars and a variety of rare culinary elements from around the world. The store is beautiful, and the owner, Atef, is an incredibly warm and knowledgable woman.
Guilty pleasure spot…
Via Carota. It’s my favorite restaurant in NYC. Eating their cacio e pepe is a transformative experience… I definitely go there more often than I should!
