On her popular Instagram account, lifestyle coach Daphne Javitch of Doing Well shares words of wisdom in the healthy living sphere — and some pretty inspiring images to boot. We have to confess: We’re utterly addicted to her feel-good quick hits. Below, a sampling of Javitch’s @doingwell tips for travelers.
1. Did you know you can opt out of the airport-security body-imaging x-ray machines? Experts agree the updated machines pose no serious health risks, but if you're pregnant and/or into minimizing EMF/radiation, just say, "I opt out,” and prepare for a pat down. To reduce daily exposure: Avoid standing near microwaves, use a headset or speakerphone with your cell phone, unplug WiFi or enable Airport Mode during sleep hours and keep your laptop/cellphone away from your private parts.
2. Airport food/plane offerings are often highly processed and loaded with sugar, salt and mysterious additives. If you choose to nosh, bring your own snacks! Seaweed sheets are salty and crisp. Chopped veggies (cucumber, fennel, carrot, radish) are crunchy and refreshing. Nut butter packs are grounding. And to-go salads hydrate and energize.
3. For optimal hydration and energy and to minimize water retention and jet lag, try liquid fasting on flights (consume water, tea, green juice, coconut water). Once you land, eat at the first mealtime of your destination.
4. A sauna or a mineral salt bath are delicious ways to unwind and cleanse after a long journey. Sweating will assist your body in releasing toxins, pollutants and radiation — also great for reducing post-plane puff!
5. Move your body every day you're on holiday. This doesn't have to be a "workout".... swimming, dancing, exploring villages, climbing rocks, bouncing your baby and sex all count!
6. Hydration is one of the easiest healthy habits to keep up while traveling. I aim for two to three liters of water a day. Guzzle on the plane, too — getting up once an hour to pee is great for circulation!
7. If you're on vacation, be on vacation. Enjoy a treat whether it's gelato, wine, a massage or a babysitter. This is life!
