Wellness and vacation resorts are, by now, cozy bedfellows. What hotel doesn’t have a spa or yoga program at this point? But few destinations have the wellness factor as integrated into the offerings as the award-winning Kamalaya Koh Samui, located on an island off the coast of Thailand. The sanctuary specializes in holistic healing, addressing everything from “stress and burnout” to “emotional balance.” Some sample treatments: royal Ayurvedic traditional massage, lymphatic drainage therapy, Taoist abdominal massage, detoxifying scrubs…

Kamalaya can also personalize a health program to guests’ specific needs, folding in activities from tai chi and qi gong to kayaking and nature hikes, and tailor the cuisine as well, which includes low-inflammation, metabolism-boosting dishes. And then there’s the location itself, which, some say, gives the resort its special energy: Kamalaya is built around a centuries-old Buddhist meditation cave. Local monks still meditate here — and guests can too.
