The Tory Burch Foundation Bio

Fashion designer Tory Burch founded the Tory Burch Foundation, a nonprofit 501 (c )(3) organization, in 2009. Inspired by Tory’s experience as a business owner and working mother, the Tory Burch Foundation is focused on supporting the empowerment of women and families. Through grants and microfinance for women entrepreneurs, the Foundation invests in the success and sustainability of women-owned businesses. Through mentoring opportunities, the Foundation provides women with tools to achieve their aspirations as entrepreneurs and leaders.

The Foundation’s first partner, Accion, the nation’s largest microfinance provider, administers the Tory Burch Foundation Fund, which provides investment in women-owned businesses through microloans ranging from $500 to $50,000. Accion provides access to capital and financial education to low- and moderate-income individuals, primarily minorities and women. Since its 1991 inception, Accion has provided more than $123 million in small business loans ranging from $500 to $50,000, nationwide and helped increase family incomes and boost community economic development. The Foundation also partners with Women’s Initiative for Self-Employment, the nation’s largest microenterprise training and funding organization, to provide entrepreneurship training and support for low-income women. Since its inception in 1988, Women’s Initiative has served over 23,000 women and in 2010, their clients created 4,332 new jobs.

In order to support women entrepreneurs in the start and growth of their businesses, the Foundation established a mentoring program, hosting events pairing leading business experts and interested participants with experience in a variety of industries with entrepreneurs in need of coaching or advice. These programs also provide networking opportunities and peer collaboration resources.

The Tory Burch Foundation logo is based on one of Tory’s favorite pieces of jewelry – a pendant her father designed for his mother, which Tory eventually received and often wears. This personal representation of inter-generational support and love is emblematic of what Tory helps to illustrate through her Foundation’s work. The Foundation’s logo can be seen on a number of Tory Burch LLC products, the profits of which benefit the Foundation’s work.
