Mentorship: Momofuku’s Sue Chan

To say “Momofuku” in NYC is to elicit a Pavlov-like response among foodies for its inventiveness (don’t miss Momofuku Milk Bar’s winning Birthday Cake). As Brand Director, Sue Chan, right, wearing Tory’s Petite Simone cardigan and Klarissa skirt, is at the forefront of everything new and exciting that chef David Chang and his mini-army are creating. She and her intern Nicole Bertrand, in Tory’s Gemma dress, compare notes on ambition and confidence.

Word of Mouth: Nancy Meyers’ The Intern

Beautiful loft spaces, head shots of Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway and… Edward Hopper’s 1942 painting of nighttime loners seated at a city diner? The connection here is in the photo, top right, of Nancy Meyers’ mood board for her upcoming film The Intern, starring — you guessed it — De Niro and Hathaway. The workplace comedy turns the usual mentorship formula on its head — Hathaway plays the founder of an e-commerce fashion company (that’s her tidy office, lower right) and De Niro, her 70-year-old senior citizen intern. Others in the cast include Rene Russo, Veep’s Reid Scott and Meyers’ own former mentee, her onetime assistant Jason Orley in his acting debut. As for how this all ties together with Hopper’s most famous work, you’ll have to wait a full year till the movie’s release in September 2015. Or keep checking Meyers’ Instagram for more teasers like those here.

In the hierarchy of interior design doyennes, Bunny Williams, right, reigns queen bee. The New York City-based tastemaker’s celebrated interiors boast a certain regal elegance that marries classical details with mixed prints and a modern attitude. Refined yet fresh, her creations (think stately European antiques paired with splashy animal prints) extend beyond the home to her Upper East Side boutique, Treillage. For Tory Daily, Williams lends her expertise to the next generation of aspiring decorators, including intern Kristin Kelly here.

Mentorship: DooBop’s Benjamin Bernet & Jodie Patterson

Benjamin Bernet’s resume reads like a beauty aisle: L’Oréal, Kiehl’s, Giorgio Armani Beauty. Jodie Patterson, far right, ran Georgia, a beauty line and boutique in Manhattan. Mutual friends introduced them and, last year, DooBop, their online skincare and beauty destination for women of color, was born. The beauty veterans and entrepreneurs — and their intern Krysten Peck, center, wearing Tory’s Tanya top — share the pearls of wisdom they’ve gathered in the workplace.

Mentorship: Every Mother Counts’ Clancy McCarty

When Christy Turlington Burns launched Every Mother Counts in 2011 to combat maternal mortality (see the Tory Daily story here), it was a small but effective group. Three years later, it’s grown thanks to the tireless work of women like Clancy McCarty, right, herself an assistant in EMC’s infancy. Now the Director of Special Projects and Production, she travels the world creating poignant films that raise awareness. Here, she and her intern Kerry Izzo (wearing Tory’s Juliana skirt at left) discuss what they’ve learned from each other this summer. For both of them it’s about work ethic, a great attitude and being willing to go the distance… sometimes quite literally.
