There’s a stretch of New York that rolls along the mighty Hudson River and is known for its perfect scenery. The Hudson Valley is where America’s great titans of industry, politics and the arts built their summer and country homes — the Astors, the Roosevelts, the Vanderbilts and the like. It is where we shot our Resort 2015 lookbook, on location at Locusts-on-Hudson estate, now owned by André Balazs. To visit is like stepping back in time to a gentler, slower-paced, enjoy-the-moment era. Its history reads like a who’s who and what’s what of great American figures and moments. Its original owner was a Supreme Court judge appointed by Thomas Jefferson in the late 1700s and, a century later, President Ulysses S. Grant would visit often. By the 1900s, Cole Porter would visit then-owner Mrs. Lytle Hull, finding the peace and quiet to compose here. And there’s a famous picture of Louis Armstrong playing the trumpet for Grace Kelly in the library. Billy Baldwin was a frequent guest of Mrs. Hull’s (though she did the décor herself, he claimed). The farms and rolling gardens — some created nearly two centuries ago — set the perfect atmosphere for Resort 2015’s vibrant green florals and painterly hues and prints.
