Book of the Week: Keith Richards’ Gus & Me

In 2010, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards published a much-lauded autobiography, Life, recounting his page-turner of a life as a bona-fide rock star — vices, women, clashes and all. This month he releases a follow-up and… it’s a beautifully written children’s book. Gus & Me further tells the story, introduced in Life, of his grandfather Theodore Augustus Dupree (a.k.a Gus) and the impact he had on a young Richards growing up in London. It was Gus, a dance-band musician, who encouraged him to take up the guitar, who brought him to instrument repair shops as a kid — “Men tested the guitar strings: dinka-plink dinka-pink” — and taught him his first song, the Spanish Malagueña. It’s a touching read, all the more so when you discover the accompanying illustrations are done by Richards’ own daughter, Theodora. Bonus: The book comes with a CD of the rocker narrating the tale himself.

Our new fall mantra: More is definitely more, especially when it comes to prints. Embrace the look — head to toe, layer upon layer — and let loose with the pattern mixing, from graphic equestrian prints to intricate dragon jacquards. One tip: Keep the shapes and silhouettes clean.

Most Wanted: Calf-Hair Saddlebag

Crafted from spotted calf hair and Italian leather, this saddlebag offers a quick hit of chic with far-flung appeal. It takes after the centuries-old Colombian carriel, worn by traditional coffee farmers who would travel for days, with mules, to deliver the beans. While the original inspiration included a bevy of hidden compartments for their long journeys — the arrieros reportedly carried everything from protective amulets to love letters — our version comes with a simplified set of interior pockets built for more modern on-the-go essentials, like, say, a card case and smartphone.

To Do: Peter Lindbergh at Gagosian Gallery

Linda. Naomi. Tatjana. Cindy. Christy. No conversation about the pantheon of Supermodels, with a capital S, is complete without mention of Peter — as in photographer Peter Lindbergh, oft-credited with creating the Supermodel phenomenon of the Nineties. That iconic, and revolutionary, 1990 British Vogue cover featuring those girls together for the first time? That was Lindbergh. The person who convinced Ms. Evangelista to famously chop her locks? Yes, that was him too. He’s responsible for countless indelible images from that era — not to mention the 1991 documentary Models, The Film, which chronicled that first-name-only set. There’s a strength and raw emotion to his subjects that only he, inspired by early German cinema, can quite capture. But don’t just take our word for it. The Gagosian Gallery in Paris is holding a 30-year retrospective of his work, ranging from those groundbreaking fashion photographs to shots from his more personal oeuvre.
