To Do: Peter Lindbergh at Gagosian Gallery

Linda. Naomi. Tatjana. Cindy. Christy. No conversation about the pantheon of Supermodels, with a capital S, is complete without mention of Peter — as in photographer Peter Lindbergh, oft-credited with creating the Supermodel phenomenon of the Nineties. That iconic, and revolutionary, 1990 British Vogue cover featuring those girls together for the first time? That was Lindbergh. The person who convinced Ms. Evangelista to famously chop her locks? Yes, that was him too. He’s responsible for countless indelible images from that era — not to mention the 1991 documentary Models, The Film, which chronicled that first-name-only set. There’s a strength and raw emotion to his subjects that only he, inspired by early German cinema, can quite capture. But don’t just take our word for it. The Gagosian Gallery in Paris is holding a 30-year retrospective of his work, ranging from those groundbreaking fashion photographs to shots from his more personal oeuvre.

Tory On: Spring 2015

“Spring 2015 captures the spirit of artist Françoise Gilot and the time she spent with Picasso in Vallauris. There’s a casual yet elegant ease to the collection, seen in the softness of the lines, and a play between raw and refined. We thought about construction and engineered patterns: raffia tweeds, graphic smocking, textured knits paired with their digital-print counterparts… Accessories only continue that story, from paint-dipped jewelry to woven leather flats and color-blocked bags.”

It's a deep dive into his oeuvre in portraiture, with some hundred works dating back 45 years — from his outsize paintings to his aluminum cutouts, iconic works to the lesser-known sketches. For those in the midst (and madness) of Paris Fashion Week, the exhibit offers the perfect cultural escape. Not in the City of Light? You can still soak in the Brooklyn artist's intense colors and deceptively reductive style; he currently has a show at Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut and another opening at London's Timothy Taylor Gallery in three weeks.

A number of museums around the world are holding exhibits dedicated to that era. The Decorative Revolution at la Pinacothèque de Paris traces the movement in France and its eventual segue into Art Deco — an accompanying exhibit on Tamara de Lempicka completes that arc — while the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston focuses on Dutch works during that period in Holland on Paper. Meanwhile, the National Gallery in London is hosting a major exhibit, Facing the Modern, that zeroes in on portraiture in Vienna, with classic works by Art Nouveau rock stars Klimt and Egon Schiele as well as other fin-de-siècle artists you might not know — but should.

A: I can't wait for the Olympics! My boys and I are big fans — we like the track and field events, tennis and soccer. There must be an amazing energy in London right now — it's one of my favorite cities. It has incredible museums and galleries — what could be more British than Damien Hirst's show right now at the Tate Modern or cooler than Herzog & de Meuron's outdoor exhibit at the Serpentine? If you want to shop, Rei Kawakubo's Dover Street Market has so many great designers in one place...which might offer a little calm from the Olympic crowds. There are so many places to eat no matter what you like (I love the sushi at Yauatcha and oysters at J. Sheekey). Have fun! — Tory
